Tiny House Hunters: This can only end in murder-suicide

Description: Family of six downsizes from 2500 square foot house to tiny home.
Available on Amazon

So there's a new version of House Hunters called Tiny House Hunters. It's about regular-sized people buying tiny houses, not little people buying regular-sized houses. The day after Christmas/Boxing Day, my sister and I were watching this episode and I paused it after about five minutes and then shouted to my mom, "Oh my God, you have to come watch this. These are the worst parents in the world."

Dan and Cindy, parents of the year.

These are the worst parents in the world, Dan and Cindy. And I don't just think Dan is a terrible parent because he has a goatee and is wearing a wacky button-down. Dan is an animator (also not the main reason I think he is a terrible parent) and Cindy is a speech therapist. They live in Santa Clarita, CA with their four kids: Emilia, 13, Isabel, 9, and twins William and Adeline, 2.

This mansion is just too big for them.

Dan and Cindy are the worst parents in the world because they have decided to move their entire family - all six of them - from their 2500 square foot house to a 600 square foot house in Corning, NY. And why are they doing this? Well, last summer they went on a weeks-long, 30 state road trip with all four kids. Then, when they got back home, all four kids went to their separate bedrooms. Now, this may seem normal to you because you're a sane person who would need to be alone after spending weeks in a minivan with your family, but for Dan and Cindy, this was cause for concern. "I got back from the trip and the kids went off to their rooms and the space spread us all out and I said to Dan, 'I think we could live in a tiny house'," Cindy says. Dan also explains further, "Em is going to be 14 and we just started to realize she's not going to be in our house very much longer and so we need to strip down to the core of what this family is." Because what you want to do right as your daughter enters her teen years is take away all her privacy. A+ plan. She's gonna murder-suicide the whole family.

The older girls look thrilled.

Now, I have lived in some small houses with my family, but we lived in those places because we had to, not because we wanted to. And we got through it, it was fine, whatever, but it's also a huge pain in the ass to be in confined spaces with one bathroom and no privacy and constantly on top of one another. I understand wanting to get out of the LA rat race and live closer to Cindy's family, but you can do so without moving your four kids into a 600 square foot house. There's a happy medium between 2500 square feet and 600.

Your overly attached tiny house hunter.

BUT ANYWAY, Cindy wants their 600 foot house to be a craftsman bungalow, but Dan wants a log cabin. Cindy want their 600 foot house to be in a Claring neighborhood, but Dan wants to be in a rural area with lots of acreage. They both want a fixer-upper. Their budget is $80,000 and they're going to pay for the house in cash. Cindy says, "This is one of those leaps that other people say, 'You can't do this.'" So you're doing this out of spite, got it.

Their realtor is Ruthie. She is a gem and the best part of this episode.

Good for the Unabomber, maybe not a family of six.

House #1 is a $100,000 420 square foot log cabin that comes with 25 acres of land. It has one bedroom and one "sort of" bathroom, the realtor's words, not mine.

The living room is, as expected, tiny.

Dan loves the stove, but Cindy is rightly concerned about the stove when they have two-year-olds. This is the house's only source of heat, which I'm sure is super great in the winter.

The twins can sleep in the dual sink.

The kitchen is, as expected, tiny. The sink uses rainwater that is collected in a big bucket outside and this house has no public utilities; the electricity is from a generator.

I really wanted Dan to get Clark Griswald-ed here.

The only bedroom is a sleeping loft. Dan thinks the kids will love the stairs to the bedroom. I think he doesn't know his kids.

I think this is the room Charlie's family from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory slept in.

Dan, Cindy, and the four kids would all have to sleep in this one room. Apparently Dan and Cindy plan on not having sex again.

The "sort of" bathroom is, in fact, an outhouse. Well, the Tennessee Valley Authority didn't extend to New York state. Dan says, "The adventure aspect is kind of appealing to me," but I think that you don't drag your family to a home with an outhouse because you want to go all Walden.

Walden by ThoreauCartman

I also just realized that they never explained how one showers in this home.

House #2 is a 1 bed, 1 bath 620 square foot house for $44,900. This house is close to Cindy's family.

The house is very dated and kind of tragic-looking.

You can do laundry as you eat dinner.

The dining room is between the living room and the kitchen and has the house's laundry hook-up.

The bathroom is, as expected, tiny. Cindy doesn't like that you have to walk sideways past the toilet, but I don't know why you'd expect a particularly big bathroom in a house this size.

A very Brady bedroom

The only bedroom in the house is, as expected, tiny.

The tiny bedroom's closet is, as expected, tiny, but Cindy says, "That's a tiny closet," as if that's not what she expected. "Life would be all about getting rid of some clothes, that's for sure." Did they not plan anything out past, "Let's move into a tiny house with our kids because they're growing up and we don't like that they're becoming more independent and are comfortable spending time by themselves"? Why the hell would you think you could keep all or most of your stuff when you move into a house that's a quarter of the size of your current home?

This would make a great bedroom.

The entrance to the attic is through the bedroom's closet and they think this would make a great bedroom for the older girls. I'm starting to think they hate their kids.

The kitchen has carpet, which is somehow even grosser than a bathroom with carpet. They don't think the kitchen makes good use of the space, which is true.

House #3 is a 1 bed, 1 bath 657 square foot house for $72,900. Cindy loves that is looks like a cottage. I agree that it's a cute house, but it would make a pretty sad-ass cottage.

This is the nicest and the largest house they've seen so far. It even has a nice front door.

The dining room is off the living room, but they don't think it would be big enough for a table of six. I can't believe a 1 bedroom house doesn't have a dining room with a table big enough for six.

This house also has the best kitchen of all three.

But Dan, a person who seriously considered a home with an outhouse, gets oddly picky about the kitchen cabinets and says that he doesn't like that they've been painted a few times and that he thinks they would have to replace them.

The same color scheme as the 1980's game show based on the board game Scrabble.

The only bedroom is very brightly colored and it makes me want to know more about who lived here before.

They check out the bathroom and, again, it's the nicest of the bunch. Cindy says, "It'll be a lot to get used to six people in one bathroom." Again, was this not something they had already considered?

There's a second floor with an open space that they say could be divided into two spaces for all the kids. Again, it's the nicest of the bunch.

Cindy and Dan discuss the three houses they've seen while eating pizza at Cindy's mom's house. That pizza looks terrible.

House #1 is the log cabin Dan wants, but it's over budget and IT DOES NOT HAVE A BATHROOM, JUST AN OUTHOUSE! How is this possibly up for consideration?

House #2 is way under budget but is terrible.

House #3 is close to their max budget and they're going to have to get new kitchen cabinets, but even so, it's the nicest of all three...so of course they don't pick this one

They pick house #2.

It's move-in day, but they're not having the whole family move in until after the school year ends, so they facetime them.

You can already see murder in the oldest daughter's eyes.

  1. I think this episode is fake. They bought the house as a rental property or something, and just pretended they'd be moving their family there for TV time.

There is NO WAY a family of 6 is going to live in that house. At least not a fairly well to do family of 6.

    3. Why is this not considered child abuse? Back where I'm from I remember parents losing custody of their children for putting a teenage boy and girl in the same room or having inadequate sleeping quarters for children. This is pretty much through same thing.is DSS considering parent intervention? This would make a great new show for hgtv!
What about divorce? I'm curious to find out if the divorce rate for tiny home owners is higher? I'd be shocked if it wasn't

  2. This was the first Tiny House episode I saw and it was the first time I was really actually more angry than amused at someone's behavior on the show. I mean come on what the fuck? When you become a parent that doesn't mean you now have a person you get to boss around and bend to your will. Those kids are equally part of the family, and everyone in the family should have their wants and feelings respected. I wanted to smack Cindy in her stupid face!

    End Rant.

I loved your commentary as usual!

    1. Yikes. I'd hate to come across you in person with that mean streak of yours Christina D. In fact the negative commentary here about this episode is surprisingly low. I wish every one of you all of the lessons that will raise you each up to a more enlightened acceptance of others' lifestyles.

    4. Christina D-no, that's exactly what it means to be a parent. It is a parent's literal job to "boss around and bend (your kids) to your will." What else do you expect parents to do? 'Strongly suggest' their kids not eat 12 pounds of Easter candy at once or maybe 'stringently advise' they not shoot heroin?

You're crazy if you think that all parents need to do is explain and reason with those little heathens. Even the well behaved ones have incredibly stupid ideas that they think are perfectly reasonable, like inviting 'just a few friends' over while parents are out for the evening. And how do you think those nominally well behaved kids get that way? Parents telling them what to do and bending their kids to their will. Or do you think that kids just naturally want to clean their rooms, do their homework and not gorge on cake 24/7?

    5. They are clearly molesting their children. These people are evil - they are trying to rob them of all privacy to engineer situations where they walk in on the oldest girl masturbating so they can discipline her in front of the entire family.

      Delete
    6. Man, how horrible of Christine to have the radical view that children are people. -_- Now, can you explain to me the health benefit of living in a tiny house, or do you somehow not understand the difference between "don't do heroin" and bossing someone around for the sake of it? (I'm guessing you're not actually that dense.)

  8. I'm up late with insomnia when this train wreck came on. Describing these parents as selfish is putting it mildly. I noticed how dan wanted to "add" an office to the back of one of those shacks they considered a house. He knew this tiny house hair brained scheme was nutty. He was gonna create a space for himself to "work". Kinda felt like he was being doubly selfish.

  9. I was equally appalled that they wanted to move this size family into a tiny house. Man hgtv could have had a hit if they picked house one. How many episodes could they have had with potty training those twins in the outhouse. I can't even imagine that. My kid is 3 and has to go every 20 minutes. You would defiantly have to go with every time, across the yard, because toddlers are assholes in the bathroom. Also you would have to worry about them falling into a well of poo. Ahh all those trips in the middle of the night would be a blast. I'm guessing that dad doesn't do any of this shit. Also the older girls were totally not into any of this. Family time? Those kids won't even want to come home.

I am not being abused, and before you jump to conclusions you should probably see outside the TV show. We've done so much work on the house, and it is one of the nicest I've lived in. It might not be the biggest house, but the benefits that have come with it have been amazing. The house is beautiful and I love it. There is a second episode coming out in Spetwmber. Maybe you should watch that then write a new post. Xx Emilia

In the end, what you lose in material appurtenances, you gain in ways that you cannot measure. We grow to become better persons by being stretched and challenged...not by being indulged. Congrats to you, because your parents just changed the course of your life, and one day, it will be realized in ways you never imagined.

    4. lol...the people commenting on this blog post are CRAZY, and clearly scarred from some childhood experience in a tiny space. Your family's house is BEAUTIFUL (just saw the updated pictures), but more importantly, you are blessed to have such a loving and close-knit family (something clearly some of these deranged posters are very jealous of). Not everyone wants to live in separate rooms in a giant house they have to work non-stop to pay for. I for one would love a smaller space and, more importantly, the freedom that comes from not having a mortgage and high utility bills. Kudos to your parents for not only embarking on this adventure, but for sharing it with everyone on TV! (and thanks for the updated pictures!!) Hope you're all enjoying your amazing house and new life in upstate NY!!!

  14. People really shouldn't be so judgemental. This is an awesome family with morals, values and lots of love. Just because they choose to live in close quarters in a little house doesn't make them bad parents. Narrow minded people should really mind their own business. Just because it's not what you would do doesn't make it wrong.

  16. Cindy here. We have lived in the house for 6 months now and we think it turned out to be very functional for our family. The older girls each have a loft bedroom, so have plenty of privacy. The lofts are a hit with their friends, who choose to hang out at our house more often than not. The twins have the existing bedroom with lots of space for toys. I invite you to check out renovation pictures at www.tinyhousefor6.com I think you will see that our kids are actually still quite privileged with the "stuff" and opportunities that they have.

Firstly, I have to say that your daughter Emilia's response to the criticisms of her family were kind, thoughtful, and articulate. I was very impressed by her mature response.
Secondly, I went to your blog and wow! What a beautiful house! I see no washer/dryer though - hope you managed to stash one somewhere.

I've lived tiny (on a. 30 ft sailboat) and it was lovely for a few months but by the 7th month I'd had it. If I had been living w someone, one of us would be dead! Bigger homes ARE better. Most of those tiny places will be popping up on craigslist at any moment because they're just not practical. Why not just buy a mobile home?

    ReplyDelete

    1. A lot of those tiny homes ARE mobile, duh. They're built on a trailer bed. And they're better than Trailers/RVs/Campers because they have better insulation and are made with higher quality materials. They will require less upkeep over time than an RV, which will break down.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It occurs to me that if the family didn't want to open themselves up for criticism, they shouldn't have put their house-hunt on national TV. I'm not saying anything one way or the other about their choice to move to a tiny house (and, in fact, I'm mostly talking to the "friends of the family" in these comments who seem really angry at people for making a judgment). It's not cool to judge others, but I'm sure this family has received tons of kudos from other outlets saying what a great choice they made and I'm equally sure no one's whining for THOSE people to stop judging... that's because people LIKE when people judge them and find them great.
Well, guess what, when you chose to go on television, people are going to talk about you. Not all of that talk will be flattering, and you know what? You don't have the right to expect it to be.
If you really feel you made the right decision, then who cares what the detractors say. Otherwise, you're just doing this all for attention, and guess what? You got it.

  24. I really hate tiny house hunters. Way too much cost for a bathroom sized place to live. A travel trailer would give more room, cost less and transports easily. Foolish people buying thsee place. I'm sure the resale is so low, that it proves to be a big mistake. HGTV when ate you going to show more than peeps and contractors buying houses. How about fix up shows that show home owners how to fix up their own place. No more blonde bimbo and her husband spending lots of money on her psrt, and contractors doing all the work. Show the people how to fix things in their own decent sized houses. No 4 wheel houses. Hate, hate them. Big money for a bathroom sized place.

  26. I thought both the blog post was hilarious and I like/commend the family for following through on something many of us only dream about doing (downsizing, escaping the rat race, etc). Living in a tiny house may not be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, but as someone now fully immersed in the rat race in NYC having two stressed out, full time working parents consumed with money worries seems to be the least favorable option of these two scenarios. They gave up space/possessions for an increase in quality of life-more family time, less time in a car, more nature, and NO MORTGAGE. Seems like a worthy trade off to me. And, it is all relative, my husband and I lived in a 450 square foot 6th floor walk up apartment for 12 years with our daughter, we moved 3 weeks before giving birth to #2. We now live in a 1,000 square foot apartment and it feels positively spacious! One thing I would love to see (and i haven't seen the update that aired after the house hunt) is where on earth they put all of their winter coats/boots/hats/scarves. We are a family of four and seem to be overrun with that stuff in the winter.

  27. These people are so typical of the hipster idiot movement. I think it's you decided to ruin your children's lives all so you can explore your inner self. And the dad is a total jerk constantly talking about how his family needs to be together when he is clearly wanting his own space. Can't wait to see how the murder suicide goes or the expensive therapy bills. Such selfish people.

  28. I just don't think this is fair to the kids. I don't believe they're happy with this decision even after reading the family's posts claiming otherwise. They are just maintaining the image the parents created in the episode. At 22 years old, my early teens weren't long ago. I can very easily recall how much I appreciated my personal space and having my own bedroom. I cannot IMAGINE going through puberty with my family living on top of me. Yes, family time is important, but family is a collective noun (meaning it describes a group). There are individuals in a family, and each individual should be represented and respected. And to the person who said kids are to be "bent" and "bossed around".... They are to be led, they are to have their hands held, and they are to be taught. When you have kids, they are your life and your priority. You are to do what is best for them and what will provide them with a proper, healthy upbringing. After watching this episode and reading all of this nonsense, I think I'm going to call my parents and thank them. Cheers.

  29. Hey! I love your blog. I am especially cracking up about how you describe the goatee, button down, and the gross pizza. (I'm from New York. Real New York. Not Corning. So pizza is a sensitive topic.)
I just went on a RANT on Facebook about these two delusional, cruel, fuckface parents and then googled to see if anyone else was as outraged as I was. So glad I am not the only one!!

  30. I don't understand - are they trying to be the next useless and delusional fuckfaces that get a reality show? The fact that they have a website and a Twitter handle promoting their child abuse leads me to believe that they have "19 Kids and Counting" or "Little People Big World" dreams.
NEWSFLASH, DAN AND CINDY - Your kids don't want to hang out with you. They don't want to sit in your 40 square foot living room and play Yahtzee and sing Kumbaya. They want to get away from you. It's called growing up. And your teenaged daughter DEF doesn't want to hang out with you. She wants her own room with a door that she can slam in your face. This is called being a teenager.
If you want to teach your children values, pick a day or 2 a week and call it family night. Don't punish them by taking away their freedom and space. Bad enough you're moving from beautiful Santa Clarita to gross upstate "the sticks" New York, but to take away children's space - that is just blood bubbling. How do you expect them to grow if you're all crammed into a sardine can and sharing 1 bathroom?
And THE MOST troubling part is that EVERY PERSON finds this whole thing ridiculous and unacceptable - including the realtor - and these delutionoids are smiling like Buddy The Elf on a hallucinogens.
I really really feel sorry for these children. Shame on these selfish parents.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My husband and I watched this episode the other day, we were HORRIFIED. We both grew up living in fairly small spaces due to circumstances, but this situation blew us both away. We find it disturbing that the parents observed a notable and obvious desire for privacy and independence when the children sought their own rooms after their vacation and their immediate response was to go to great lengths to take both of those away. Now they're making four kids share a single bathroom, which is ludicrous. But far worse is making teen/preteen girls live in a bedroom that appears to have no doors? Our only comfort is that in a few years, the older girls will have moved out and the twins will have separate rooms, as is fitting.

Show some respect, if nothing good will come out from your mouth, it is better to keep silence, if they are making a mistake, they will themselves realize along the road, and on the other side, they may discover this works for them, and may work for others too. The world is so big and you people would be amazed to discover how people manages in the rest of the world, keep your minds open, discuss without insulting, show some morals and civics, display the best behavior you can so that your own kids learn from you, to accept other people and learn from the best version of you, as I mentioned, start to take a look at your own parenthood skills (starting with the respect and how you treat others), because that is what you are teaching to your kids, even when you don't realize about it.

  44. Wow, I have 3 teenage girls and four younger kids and we live in a 980 square foot home. 3 bedrooms. We have our issues sometimes, but the last 9 years have been great. We have money to go to Hawaii every year, Disneyworld, and Arizona for Spring Break. They love it. We have grown much closer together. Being selfish is not an option. Most people posting on here are only thinking about the negatives that come up fairly infrequently because the kids are at school most of the time and we vacation a lot in the summer, so ultimately our home is just where we sleep.

  57. Ok, this is soooooo awesome! Your posts are too funny, it was enjoyable to go through them all. I watched the episodes after reading your blog. It made them so much more better. I wish you had gone on. Better still are all the crappy comments from ???? Who do not even know english. Thank god for google translate. I appreciate your hard work at putting together blog and the time you spent. You rock. If I ever get on a show I will let you know so you can critique me; I will LMAO.

  58. Man, that was a trainwreck. I was watching that episode with my dad and he was asking me if these people were insane and if they just planned on never having sex again. And he said it's normal for the kids to want privacy and space because that's what you do as you grow up.

  59. Poor baby, she must be really angry with her parents and hate them, is the worst they could have done. How selfish they are

    ReplyDelete
  60. Do wonder if they're still in the house. The oldest daughter must be 18 or 19? Wonder if she went to college or is she still living in the house.... And, wonder what happened to the other daughter who would be maybe 16? Hope the parents allowed them to be teenagers and young adults and didn't confine them...

  61. OP your review was hilarious. It was also comical reading the comments from the so-called "Ruth the realtor" and "the oldest daughter." If this is real the parents are sadists and psychopaths.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hey this is Ruthie the Realtor and I’m amazed at all these comments. Dan and Cindy are awesome, wonderful people and parents, who are extremely talented at remodeling homes. I had the privilege of selling several homes to them and for them. This was a move to be closer to family and I will always love them for all these reasons. Ruthie McLennan
